Quick Appetizers
Simple easy to make appetizers.
Appetizers are a tasty food that stimulates the appetite. They are commonly served at the beginning of a meal, but can be used for snacks at receptions, open houses, baby or bridal showers.
The following are some simple suggestions for quick and easy appetizers.
One of America’s most popular foods is salsa
It has quickly gained fame as the most eaten appetizer. Not only is salsa quite tasty, but it has little or no fat.
For an easy variation from basic salsa, mix with equal amounts of refried beans and top off with cheese. Heat in the microwave until the cheese is melted and serve hot.
A natural companion for any salsa is chips. Most potato and corn chips are fried so they contain high levels of fat. For a low-fat alternative try baked chips or pretzels. Usually, the salsa itself will make up for any flavor lost from using baked rather than fried chips.
Cut raw vegetables are another healthy appetizer
They can be decorative and colorful if arranged on a chip tray with a salad dressing dip. Remember most regular salad dressing are loaded with fat, so try the low-fat version. Low-fat sour cream can be mixed with ketchup and garlic powder for an easy quick vegetable dip.
A versatile staple to build the foundation of a quick, easy appetizer is cream cheese. Use reduced fat cream cheese for a lower fat option. Some of the following are excellent ways to top off your cream cheese appetizer: green pepper jelly, small shrimp with cocktail sauce, chopped pickles or pickle relish, a dash of Worcestershire sauce with chives or chopped chutney with a small amount of curry powder. These may be served with crackers, thin-sliced toast or chips.
If you have a sweet tooth try mixing softened cream cheese with ½ cup of sugar or splenda, add a small can of crushed drained pineapple. Arrange around a chip bowl and serve with graham crackers. The top may be garnished with cut strawberries or blueberries if desired.
Happy entertaining and may you all enjoy these quick and easy appetizers.
