Delight in The Best Hot Dogs in Tucson
Hot dogs may not be the first type of fare you think to order when you get to Tucson, but maybe they should be. With some of the most beloved and unique franks in the country, Tucson is the perfect place to expand your hot dog horizon and celebrate National Hot Dog Month, which is held each July.
Wherever you decide to go, be sure to try a Sonoran Dog, which is named after Sonora, Mexico, the city that inspired it, and combines the classic dog with bacon, onion, cheese and chili sauce.
Check out some of the best places to fulfill your hot dog craving in Tucson:
El Guero Canelo
5201 S. 12th Ave.
Tucson, AZ 85706
Although El Guero has separate menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, hot dogs are served anytime. The Contreras opened this upgraded taco stand in 1993 with the goal of serving authentic Mexican cuisine. Today, the restaurant is still owned, operated and managed by the family and is known for its distinct Mexican flare. You can order hot dogs normally or as Sammy dogs (two franks), and you can slather it with a number of sauces and toppings at the salsa. The very affordable spot is most well known for its Sonoran dog, which is wrapped in bacon and served with grilled onions, beans and mustard, among other garnishes.
Luke’s Italian Beef
1615 S. Alvernon Way
Tucson, AZ 85711
If you’re in the market for a more traditional hot dog, stop by Luke’s for their renowned Chicago-style franks. Here, Vienna beef dogs are served on a poppy seed bun, and every order comes with a free side of grease. Also check out their selection of Italian sandwiches, but be sure to ask for cheese, peppers or other toppings, as they will come plain otherwise.
Aqui Con El Nene
W. Wetmore Rd. and Flowing Wells Rd.
Tucson, AZ 85707
In northwest Tucson, you’ll find this street grill that also features one of the best Sonoran dogs in the city. Some other favorite menu items at Aqui Con El Nene include the papanacha, a baked potato covered in beans and carne asada, and the tacos. Even kids love the hot dogs and quesadillas, with lots of cheese on both. The franks (and all the meat) are grilled in the open, and the service is fast.
BK Tacos
5118 S. 12th Ave.
Tucson, AZ 85706
OR
2680 N. 1st Ave.
Tucson, AZ 85719
In addition to serving yet another competitor for “Best Sonoran Hot Dog,” BK is known for its excellent tacos, tortas, burros, caramelos and hamburgers. Their Sonoran is served wrapped in bacon and with mayonnaise, diced onion, tomato and a chile pepper on top. There are two BK locations in Tucson: the southern location retains the taco stand charm, while the northern is a more traditional sit-down restaurant. BK is especially famous for its extensive and delicious salsa bar.
