Italian Sausage Heros for The Crock Pot

published by pattiann on Sep 15, 2012

It is cool in my neck of the woods and thought we should bring out our crock pot recipes. Here is a delicious one =)

This is from Better Homes and Gardens neew crockery cooker cookbook

1 pound bulk Italian sausage

1/2 pound ground beef

1 cup chopped onion

1-15 ounce can tomato sauce

1 71/2 ounce can tomatoes, cut up.

1 4 ounce can mushroom stemps and pieces , drained

1/2 cup pitted sliced olives

4 teaspoons quick cooking tapioca

1 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon dried oregano, crushed

1/8 teaspoon pepper

dash garlic powder

8 french style rolls, split lengthwise

6 ounces sliced mozzarella cheese

In a large skillet cook sausage, ground beef and onion till meat is brown and onion is tender, Drain off fat.

Meanwhile, in a 3 1/2 or 4 quart crockery cooker  combine tomato sauce, undrained tomatoes, mushrooms, olives and tapioca, sugar, oregano, pepper and garlic powder. Stir in meat mixture. Cover, cook on low heat setting for 10-12 hours.

Using a fork, hollow out bottom halves of rolls, leaving 1/4 inch thick shells. Place cheese in bottom halves , trimming as necessary to fit . Spoon meat mixture into rolls. Cut remaining cheese into strips and place atop meat mixture. Cover with roll tops. Makes 8 servings
