Fish finger is a food that is loved by young and old alike. You can use it as a starter, as a snack or to go along with food items like dal (Indian lentil and pulses curry). It goes very well even with beer!

Many of us buy fish fingers from road-side stalls or even purchase the buy-and-fry stuff from department stores. But why consume unhealthy ready to eat fish fingers with added artificial colours and preservatives, when you can easily make them at home?

All you need is (1) 250 grams of light fried boneless fish, (2) 100 grams of gram flour/corn flour, (3) a teaspoonful of soya sauce, (4) green chillies, (5) coriander leaves, (6) turmeric powder, (7) powdered cumine seeds powder,(8) spoonful of garlic paste (optional), (9) finely chopped onions or spring onions (optional) and (10) biscuit dust (optional).

Mix the fish with the flour thoroughly. Add a teaspoon of soya sauce, turmeric powder, powdered cumine seeds, finely chopped green chillies and coriander leaves. (We are avoiding using red chilly powder as it is supposed to cause/aggravate stomach ulcers). You can also add some garlic paste and finely chopped onions or spring onions. Add a bit of water to make sure the dough is soft and add salt to taste. Knead it to make sure the dough is not sticking to your fingers. Now divide the dough into small little lumps, the size of dates. Turn these into the shape of small cylinders, the shape and size of fingers. (Note that making these too thick might cause the paste inside to remain uncooked). Leave these aside for about eight to ten minutes (to let the fish fingers harden a bit) and then fry them. (You can roll these in biscuit dust before frying, but do note that biscuit dust is known to absorb excessive oil). Fry these till the fingers are light brown. (Try to avoid over-frying; remember that the key to healthy eating lies in using minimum oil).

Now sprinkle a bit of rock-salt dust on the fried fish fingers and serve with sauce, salad and chips

Oh come on! Its not that bad! Grandpa down the road used to have five of these every night before he went off to sleep. And he donated his heart to a budding para-glider when he died!

Although I am not a great fan of cookbooks(though I read them sometimes for timepass), but I am certainly a voracious eater and not only that but an excellent taster(self proclaimed).
Next time …won’t leave you or the fishes in a hurry!!
