Always Apple Dumplings

·       2 cups flour

·       ½ tsp. salt

·       ½ cup milk

·       2½ tsp. baking powder

·       2/3 cup shortening

·       6 sliced and peeled apples

·       1 cup sugar

Sauce:

·       2/3 cup sugar

·       2 cups water

·       1 tbsp. butter

·       1 tsp. cinnamon

Sift flour, baking powder and salt together.  Cut in shortening until size of peas.  Sprinkle milk over and stir with fork.  Handle as pie crust, roll and place in 9×13 inch pan.  Place sliced apples in middle, sprinkle with about 1 cup sugar and top with dots of butter.  Sprinkle 1 tsp. cinnamon over it.  Fold dough over apples, sealing slightly.  Sprinkle about 1 tbsp. sugar over crust.  Boil sauce together in pan for about 3 minutes.  Pour around apple dumplings.  Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes or until the apples are tender.  This has a lot of crust.  Serve in bowl with milk.  We eat cheese with this and it makes a whole meal.
