Brötchen, German Bread Rolls
How you can make a very popular European food at your home.
Everyone who has ever been to Germany or knows a german, knows that these bread rolls are one of the most popular foods there and all over Europe! And here is on of the easiest ways to make it right in your own home!!!
Ingredients
- 4 cups flour, all purpose or whole wheat
- 2 packages of dry yeast
- 1/2 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 350 ml (1,5 cups) warm water
Method
- Put the yeats and the sugar in the warm water, stir it a bit and let stand so the yeast can start working for about 5 minutes.
- In that time put the flour and salt into a bowl, then add the yeast water and mix everything together to a smooth dough with your hands.
- Put a dish towel over the bowl and let it stand in a warm place for 30 minuetes, so the dough can rise.
- Then preheat the oven to 400 °F and with floured hands form 8 evenly sized rolls from the dough and place on a cookie sheet which is covered with a silicone sheet.
- Lightly slice a line on top of each roll, cover again and let stand in a warm place for another 15 minutes.
- Then put the rolls with another oven safe dish filled with water in the over for 20 minutes on the middle rack. They are done when they are very slightly browned.
- If you want to eat them right away leave them in the oven for 3-4 minutes longer.
- If you want to eat them the next day or so just heat them up again over a toaster or for 4-5 minutes in the oven or untul heated through!
