Buttermilk Cheddar Bread

published by The Shade on Mar 23, 2009

A delicious buttermilk bread that is wonderfully incorporated with just the right amount of cheddar.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of buttermilk
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 5 to 5 1/2 cups of all- purpose flour

Method

Heat the buttermilk and the water with the butter until the butter melts.  Stir in sugar and salt; cool to about 120 degreese Fahrenheit.  IN a large bowl, combine yeast, soda, and cheese with 1/2 the flour.  Add the first mixture.  Beat at low speed for 30 seconds, then beat on medium speed for about 3 minutes.  With a wooden spoon, stir in enough flour to make a soft, but firm, dough.  Knead 7 to 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic.  Place in a greased bowl with greased side up.  Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.  Punch down; knead once again and shape into 2 loaves.  Put in greased 9×5 inch pans.  Let rise for 30 to 40 minutes or until double.  Bake in preheated oven (400 degrees Fahrenheit) for 30 to 40 minutes.

Enjoy!

Great bread recipe. Had amazing texture and was easy. I will add more cheese next time. I think I would do 2-2 1/2 cups and maybe not all shredded maybe some chunky pieces so you really get a cheesy bread. All in all it was a great recipe and I want to thank you for sharing!
