Dried Fruit and Chestnut Crumble

published by SuperMember on Oct 25, 2010

The crumble is British in origin and is now popular everywhere. It consists of a baked layer of fresh and dried fruit under a crispy crumb topping. It goes well with ice cream, crème fraîche or sour cream, and could even be served with yogurt at a festive breakfast. A real treat.

Ingredients (6 dishes)
6 dried figs, without the stalks, each cut into 4
125 grams vacuum-packed chestnuts, whole or halved
3 apples, 2 red and 1 green, thinly sliced
¼ cup OF WHAT??
1 cinnamon stick
½ cup boiling water
¼ cup dried cherries or raisins
1-2 bananas

Crumble:
¾ cup wholewheat flour
¼ cup oats
⅓ cup pressed brown sugar
75 grams cold butter

Preparation:
1. Heat oven to 180ºC. Grease 22cm square baking mould with butter. Put aside.
2. In a small bowl, mix chestnuts with boiling water, cover and steam for 5 minutes, or until they start to soften. Add the figs and apples and cook for 3-4 minutes more until the apples soften.
3. Add the cherries or raisins and cook for 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat, take the cinnamon stick and stir in with the bananas and nuts. Pour evenly into the baking mould.
4. Meanwhile, mix the flour, oats and sugar in a bowl. Add the butter and work with your hands into crumbs. Sprinkle on the fruit mixture and bake for 30-40 minutes until brown. Set aside for a few minutes before serving – preferably in individual glass bowls.

Sounds like a good cobbler. I have never tried making anything with figs but I know they are very sweet.
