Homemade Herb and Garlic Bread

A specialty bread recipe, makes 2 loaves.

Makes 2 loaves

Ingredients

  • 3 Packages of Active Dry Yeast
  • ½ C. Warm water
  • 1 Teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 ½ Warm Milk
  • 2/3 C. Sugar
  • ½ C Butter (softened)
  • 3 Teaspoons Salt
  • 6 to 7 C. Flour
  • 2 Tablespoons Parsley
  • 2 Tablespoons Oregano
  • 2 Tablespoons Thyme
  • 2 Tablespoons Rosemary
  • 2 Tablespoons Garlic Powder

Method

  1. In small bowl dissolve yeast in ½ C warn water, stir in 1 Teaspoon sugar . Let it stand 5 to 10 minutes til foamy.
  2. In a larger bowl mix 1 ½ C warm milk,2/3 C sugar, 3 Teaspoons salt,1/2 C softened butter
  3. Stir yeast mixture into larger bowl. Add 2 C flour and mix well.
  4. By hand add 4 more C of flour 1 C at a time ( to cut down on mess) Dough needs to be slightly stiff
  5. Knead in the remaining flour until smooth and stretchy
  6. Wash larger bowl and dry well
  7. Slightly oil larger bowl. Place dough in bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and towel let rise for 2 hours
  8. After it has risen punch dough down, and divide in half
  9. Use rolling pin and roll out each half to about ½ inch thick
  10. Mix spices together then divide in half
  11. Use one half of mixture for each half of dough , sprinkling it evenly over the dough
  12. Fold one half of the dough over several times form into loaves
  13. Place in greased bread pans
  14. Cover loaves with towel and let rise for another hour
  15. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes
  16. Cool in pan on rack for 20 minutes. Brush melted butter over top. Let loaves cool completely before removing from pan.
  17. Wrap in plastic wrap to retain freshness
