How to Make Perfectly Shaped Bread Buns

published by Athlyn Green on May 17, 2008

A neat trick for shaping bread buns.

There’s nothing like the taste of homemade buns but trying to shape them can be a problem. Some people place their buns in muffin tins but this doesn’t really do the trick because then you end up with mushroom shaped buns; others try to shape them by tucking the dough and forming it into a circle- but usually the buns are uneven when they rise.

Buns should be round and high enough for easy slicing. How do you shape perfect bread buns?

Method for Shaping Perfect Bread Buns

  • Grab a palm-sized portion of dough and cut it from the main dough batch
  • Drop it on an unfloured counter. Your bread dough needs to stick to the counter to help in the bun-shaping process.
  • Now, join the thumb and middle finger of your right or left hand and place it over the dough ball. Start rolling your hand towards the middle, in circles. Make sure the underside of your hand remains in contact with the counter. Keep turning. Watch as the dough magically forms into a perfect circle.

Set your bun on a greased baking sheet or pan and continue making buns, using the same technique.

Once you get the hang of it, you can use both hands to shape two bread buns at once.

This method for making perfectly shaped bread buns is the best I’ve come across. It’s fast, easy, and surprisingly effective.

This needs a video to demonstrate the technique

I agree. I took pictures for this article but couldn’t get them to load.

My apologies for the wait on the pic. This should help to illustrate how to form your buns.
