White Bread
Bread is always much nicer tasting when it is home made. This recipe is an all day job but is worth the taste. Because bread seems to be hard for so many to make, this recipe is simplified so that anyone can make their own home made bread. The tip to a good tasting bread is being able to knead your bread well.
Ingredients
- 3 3/4 tsp yeast
- 4 tbsp white sugar
- 3 tbsp shortening
- 2 tsp salt
- 10 – 14 cups flour
Method
- Mix 1 cup hot tap water, 3 3/4 tsp yeast and 1 tbsp white sugar. Let this rise to the two cup mark on a measuring cup. This will take approximately 20 minutes.
- After ten minutes put some water on to boil. In a bread bowl place 3 tbsp shortening, 3 tbsp sugar and 2 tsp salt. Add 1 1/2 cups boiling water. Pour over mixture in bowl. Your shortening will melt.
- Add 3 cups cold water and yeast mixture. Now add 10 cups flour. Place flour on counter. Put ball of dough which which will have a sticky texture on counter. Keep adding extra flour to mixture which could end up another 2 -4 more cups. Mix so your mixture does not have as wet of a texture.
- Knead bread for 7 – 10 minutes. Throw mixture back in bowl and let rise, covered with a cloth, in oven with the light on. This takes approximately another hour because you want it to double in size again.
- Take out and punch down. Place back in oven for another hour.
- Place in bread pans and let rise for another hour. Should double in size again.
- Now put in oven at 400 for approximately 45 minutes. Cook until golden brown.
- When you take your bread out add a little margarine or butter to the top of your bread.
Enjoy !!
