Homemade Instant Oatmeal

Making your own instant oatmeal not only saves money, it is healthier too.

When I had twins I learned to make a few things that I often bought at the store. I learned to make my own wipes, baby food and instant oatmeal.  I like to make my own recipe because the kids help me make it and take some ownership in eating it.  Plus, they can add extras they like to eat!  You can also adjust the recipe for your individual needs. My oldest boy eats twice the amount of oatmeal my youngest eats.  So I put more in a sandwich for the oldest.

Basic Instant Oatmeal Recipe

Ingredients

3 C Quick cooking oats

Plastic sandwich bags or snack bags

(I double this recipe.  As you get use to this recipe you’ll be able to eye the amount)

Preparation

Put 1 cup of oats in blender and whirl at high speed until powdery; reserve in small bowl.  Into each sandwich bag put 1/4 c unpowdered oats, 2 T powdered oats and a pinch of salt.  Store bags in a box or airtight container.

When ready to eat, dump one bag into a bowl and slowly add boiling water.

(I usually add 1 T dry milk and 1 T wheat germ to ALL bags. I’ve also added milled flax.)

Add in:

Sweetened Oats

Add 1 T sugar to each bag

Wheat Germ Oatmeal

Add 2 T wheat germ to bag

Fruit and Cream

1T dry milk, 2 T dried fruit. Or use jam or fresh fruit after cooking

Oatmeal With Raisins and Brown Sugar

Ad 1 T packed brown sugar and 1 T raisins

Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

To each packet add 1 T sugar, 1/4 t cinnamon, 2 T chopped dried apples

Homemade Baby Wipes

Easy Italian Pasta

Chicken Noodle Soup

Tortilla Chicken Salad

Homemade Lemonade

Powdered Milk? Yuck.
