Real French, French Toast
Make a delicious French toast using the light and fluffy French bread. Easy, delicious!

Real French-French Toast
4 one inch slices French bread
4-5 large eggs
1/2 cup evaporated milk, or heavy cream
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Beat eggs with milk, sugar and vanilla until all are blended and sugar is dissolved.
Warm fry pan with pat of butter and spread around the pan until all is coated. (Please, I don’t use anything but real butter for the flavor. Margarine also causes things to stick to the pan!) Dip and cook only 2 slices of bread at a time because French bread quickly absorbs the egg mixture and will break up, so don’t let the bread remain in the egg mixture for too long, but long enough to soak through. Best to use your hands to get this to the fry pan!
Place 2 slices in fry pan and cook until both sides are golden brown but not dry. Fix 2 remaining slices.
Put all on platter and butter each slice and then add strawberry slices and mint for a garnish. Serve with maple or berry syrup that has been warmed.
This is a delicious Sunday brunch item to be added with other foods to make your dining tres’ magnifique!

With all these great recipes of yours I can’t get out of the kitchen. I am going to do your chicken sandwich for lunch today as we roasted a chicken yesterday. But in the morning I will for certain make your french toast or maybe tonight for supper. Keep them coming – you must be a good cook!

I never used evaporated milk when making french toast. It sound like a lot more calories but I would like to try it. I’ll just have to walk it off.

Diamond-it is a lot of calories, especially heavy cream in place of evap. milk, then too, there’s the butter……….
If we just don’t eat like this all the time and be moderate-then it’s managable. Thanks so much for coming to read, I truly appreciate it!

Hi Guy,
Thanks for coming to read. I love this recipe and it’s easy, ya, would go good with black coffee and if you ever want to overdo yourself, add bacon or ham, eggs, hashbrowns and then just roll over and take a nap! I appreciate your coming by and leaving your nice comment. I have many “bolder” articles yet to finish-but recipes are good-and when I can get them finished there will be one I would like your opinion on, will send you a message. Take care!

Jane,
I can probably keep the recipes coming forever and so if there’s any special one you’d like to know about, just let me know and I’ll see if I have it. I’ve always wanted to write a cookbook but since I’m not on any coooking show and no one knows who in heck I am, I think it may be a hard one to sell, you never know.
Thanks bunches!

Dear Frances-thanks so much for coming by to read this recipe-the kids love it here and one morning after I’d just served little Reece (age 4), I sat him down on his special table and in a few minutes I kept hearing “mmmmm, mmmmm!” I said “what’re you doing mmmmm about?” He said the French toast was really good-well this was a shot of love straight to the heart!
Thanks so much!

Nice! The French would serve this ‘pain perdu’ as a dessert (minus the sugar in the batter) rather than for breakfast. The slices of bread can be drained in a sieve if they do get over soaked. Tasty with icing/powdered sugar sprinkled over just before serving.
