Your House Instant Oatmeal

Instant oatmeal is a popular breakfast or snack item. Try these tips to make you own versions. Save money and personalize flavor!

Oatmeal is the ultimate hot breakfast, snack, and I just want it item. If you agree, then maybe you have bought the instant blends available from different major or store brands. The thing is that traditional oatmeal only takes 8-10 minutes to cook in the micro on half-power for 3/4 cup oats plus 1 1/2 cups water (2 servings.) That can be popped in while you are doing something else since we’re all mighty multi-taskers.

And then when the oatmeal comes bubbling out, you can make your own flavors! Butterscotch chips, chocolate chips, plain old cinnamon and sugar all make the best DIY flavors ever. Or try flavored yogurt added to the mix: mango and apricot, key lime, blueberry. It only takes a little to make a good blend. Add dried fruit and nuts like sunflower seeds, pecan, cashew. Flavored creamers work well.

For minimal effort and price, you can improve on packaged flavors. Involve the kids in creating their own favorites. They’ll enjoy the activity and be more inclined to eat the results.

42 oz canisters of oatmeal go for around $2.50 and yield 30 servings.
