Christmas Eve Activities for Children

published by mphsglo on Dec 16, 2011

Christmas Eve can be an exciting time for children, but, a busy time for parents. Getting dinner prepared and other preparations for Christmas, can leave children are a little restless and looking for something to do. Create activities for children on Christmas Eve.

Christmas Eve can be a little hectic for parents, who are trying to get last minute shopping done, assembly toys, while prepare dinner for those who may visit on Christmas day.  Because parents are busy, it’s particularly important to have activities for the children, who will otherwise become quite restless.

Here are a few activities that children will enjoy doing on Christmas Eve.  This will not only put the parents nerves at ease, but, will occupy the minds and bodies of the little one.

Gift wrapping:  Most of us would like to think that by Christmas Eve all of the presents are wrapped and under the tree, however, this is rarely the case.  Wrapping gifts is a project that children can enjoy and it makes them feel useful.  Even the youngest ones can participate, if you have gift bags, by placing tissue in the bags and placing bows and tags on the gift cards.  Aunts and uncles will love seeing their names in the little ones’ handwriting.

Games:  Christmas Eve is a great opportunity to implement a game night.  Pull out some of the greats, like Monoply, which is always a lengthy engagement.  Also, dominoes, Candy Land, checkers, Chutes and Ladders, and Scrabble are nice games to have available for any game night.  Make a ‘nibble’ table with sandwiches, chips and candies for them to enjoy.

Movies and Popcorn:  Christmas Eve can become movie night, which should keep the children busy as long as you keep the DVD’s coming.  Pop a few bags of popcorn and play children’s favorites; whether it’s Christmas shows or their favorite movies this activity will serve as a great distraction while Dad is assembling bikes and toys in the garage.

Cookie baking:  Christmas Eve usually has the kitchen totally in disarray, but, you can give the children an opportunity to bake and decorate Christmas cookies, by letting them use a toaster oven in the den or another apart of the house.  This activity is most successful with the older children, of course, but, they will enjoy making the cookies with prepared cookie dough.  There is a guarantee that a lot of the Christmas cookies won’t make it to the dinner table, so, make sure you have plenty of dough.  Those cookies that don’t end up in their stomachs can be used as gifts to neighbors.

These are just a few Christmas Eve activities for children that will keep them out of your hair and give them hours of enjoyment as they wait, not too patiently for Christmas day.

Thanks for your comments. I can remember getting chased out of the kitchen many times on Christmas Eve as a child, while my mother was cooking.
