Dinosaur Cookies: Quick, Easy and Convenient Sugar Cookie Cutout Recipe

These simple but delicious sugar cookies have simple ingredients and are perfect for dunking in milk. The dough can be made beforehand and frozen for up to a few days to have cookies whenever you want.

I have grown up with these cookies- they are perfect for dunking in milk, and it is very fun for your kids to cut out their own shapes in the dough. I always used dinosaur cookie cutters, so we came to call these sugar cookies ‘Dinosaur Cookies.’ Because they require chilling, the dough can conveniently be frozen for a few days until you are ready to make the cookies. This way, it is easy to bake a batch whenever you’d like. You can also decorate them before baking, or after if you use icing. The recipe for icing is found at the bottom of the article. The cookie recipe is adapted from the Better Homes and Gardens 1989 recipe book.

Preparation Time: 20 minutes

Chill Time: 3 hours

Bake Time: 7-8 minutes

Ingredients:

-1/2 cup butter

-2 cups all-purpose flour

-1 egg

-1/2 cup sugar

-1 tablespoon milk

-1 teaspoon baking powder-1 teaspoon vanilla

-dash salt

Directions:

  1. Beat butter in an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds.
  2. Add the egg, sugar, milk, baking powder, vanilla, salt, and about half of the flour.
  3. Once thoroughly combined, beat in remaining flour.
  4. Divide the dough in half, cover, and chill for 3 hours.
  5. Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees.
  6. Roll half of the dough at a time on a lightly floured surface until it is 1/8 inch thick.
  7. Use cookie cutters, a knife or just an upside-down glass to cut any shapes you want.
  8. Place the cutouts on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  9. If you’d like to, decorate with sprinkles, candies, cherries, etc.
  10. Bake in the 375 degree oven for 7 to 8 minutes, or until the edges are lightly browned.
  11. Let cool on a wire rack.
  12. If you’d like to, make icing (recipe below) and smear on the cookies, then decorate with sprinkles or other decorations.
  13. Pour a glass of milk, grab a cookie, and enjoy!

Icing Recipe:

-1/2 cup powdered sugar

-milk or water

  1.  Add a teaspoon of milk or water at a time to the powdered sugar until you reach the consistency you’d like. The best icing is neither runny nor too thick.
  2. If you accidentally end up with icing that is too runny, add more powdered sugar. If you end up with thick icing, add a teaspoon more of liquid.
  3. Dribble some icing onto the cookie and smear it around with a butter knife, then add sprinkles, fruits, and other decorations.
