Crockpot Apple Pie Applesauce
Why not head to your nearest farmers market and get apples picked fresh this fall? Small local markets typically offer wonderful prices on produce and you cant buy it any fresher when its grown in your own back yard. One of our family favorite fall recipes in September is what my kids have dubbed as crockpot apple pie applesauce. Warning: make lots, it doesn’t last very long.
Ingredients
- 8-10 Granny Smith Apples
- 1/4 cup instant Tapioca
- 1/4 cup granulated Sugar
- 1 tblsp Cinnamon
- 1/2 cup water
Method
- Peel, core and chop apples into 1″ pieces and place in 2qt crockpot.
- Stir tapioca, sugar, cinnamon and water together in a separate bowl until sugar is dissolved.
- Pour over apples.
- Cover and Cook on high setting for 4-6 hours or low setting for 8-10 hours.
- Using a whisk, stir sauce half way through cooking. The apples will break down and it will become more saucy as it cooks.
You can put this into a pie crust and bake it until the crust is done but we like to serve this warm (not hot) with vanilla ice cream or (if you can stand to wait) refrigerate and serve it cold.
You can also add more tapioca if you want to make more of an apple style pudding. Our family loves it both ways. This is a sweeter version of apple sauce, so if you like a tart style sauce, use less sugar or omit it completely.
