Five Quick and Easy Filipino Desserts
Palitao
Palitao is a sweet delicacy and it only consists of a few ingredients: glutinous rice flour, grated coconut, sugar and sesame seeds.
In a small bowl, mix sugar and sesame seeds. Put aside.
In a bowl put glutinous rice flour and add water, mix well until you reach a “handable” consistency. Shape the mixture into small balls, and flatten them. Then drop the pieces into boiling water. In won’t take long and the balls will float. Once they float remove them from the water and roll them into the grated coconut, then into the sugar/sesame seed mixture.
Ginataan
Ginataan (sometimes spelled as ginatan, or guinataan), is a popular Filipino dessert that has the sweet taste of coconut milk. Here is how to make ginataan: Traditionally it’s made of freshly squeezed coconut milk. However since we want it instant we will just use canned coconut milk =) There are no fixed measurements here, just add the ingredients according to your taste. Let coconut milk and water boil, then add chopped sweet potato, yam, taro, plantaine banana, jackfruit, tapioca pearls and sugar. Mix well. Best served hot.
Polvoron
Polvoron (sometimes spelled as polvuron) is the Filipino version of a shortbread. It doesn’t involve any cooking at all, just a little bit toasting of the flour prior to mixing it with the powdered milk, melted butter and sugar. The complete recipe can be found on this article, “How to Make Delicious Polvoron”.
Turon
Turon is really easy to make. It is just like a spring roll but the filling is banana instead of meat or vegetables. Turon is a very popular Filipino dessert and snack. This is how to make turon: Lie flat a piece of spring roll wrapper and put sliced banana (plantaine banana). Sprinkle with a little bit of brown sugar. You can also add slices of jackfruit, this will make the turon even more delicious. Then wrap it ala spring roll style. Deep fry until brown and crispy. Yum!
Halo-Halo
Halo means “mix”. This popular dessert, halo-halo, means to mix different kinds of ingredients. It is a cold and refreshing drink with lots of crushed ice. This is how to make halo-halo: On a tall glass, put fillings of your choice, such as cooked red beans or any beans you like, sliced bananas and coconut jelly. These different fillings can be bought ready made in jars (available in Asian stores). Then add sugar, lots of crushed ice, and milk. Top it with a scoop of your favourite ice cream. This is a quick and easy Filipino dessert to make and it’s fun to make it in a gathering or party.
