Eat to Lower Cholesterol

published by Tulan on Jan 26, 2012

The cholesterol story began in 1951 when the pentagon sent pathologists to Korea to study the bodies of servicemen who lost their lives to the war. A waxy substance was found in the bodies identified as a major contributor to the buildup of plaque. Before that we knew nothing about cholesterol. Well, now we do, and there is a lot we can do about it.There are many foods and herbs that will lower cholesterol. If your cholesterol is higher than you like, try these foods listed below. you can mix and match to make tasty healthful meals. These food eaten daily will get your numbers down where you want them. Your doctor might even take you off medications.

Include these foods in your diet and your cholesterol numbers will fall off.  Your diet should include plenty of fruit, whole grains and vegetables with a minimum of salt and fat. For every one percent drop in cholesterol there is a two percent drop in the risk of heart attack.

For breakfast:

Orange, apple, carrot, grapefruit whirled in the blender instead of plain orange juice. You might whirl up a jar full and keep it in the frige for several mornings worth of juice.

Whole grain muffins

Fresh fruit as available

Oatmeal with a touch of safflower oil

For Lunch:

Soup made with beans, onions, carrots, garlic, barley, plus other spices to taste.

Whole wheat topped off with any nut butter, no oils or margarine.

High fiber salad

Whole fruit cocktail

Oatmeal cookie or bran muffin

For Dinner:

Burrito made with refried beans, salsa, rice, wrapped in a whole grain tortilla or

Vegetarian chili with tofu: corn meat muffins slathered with nut butter or

Whole wheat hot dog bun filled with onions, cole slaw, barbecue sauce, mustard or make them vegetarian with lentil or black bean with wild rice or

New England Boiled Dinner: One cup each of boiled cabbage, onions, celery, carrots and potatoes with a dash of herbs and spices. I wouldn’t eat all that at one serving, I would have it for several meals. and

A big green salad

Fruit cocktail

After a couple of weeks on this diet there should be a cholesterol reduction of 10 to 20 percent.  Try it and see how low you can get your numbers.
