Pears; Are We Ignoring This Super Fruit?

published by lolontka on Feb 26, 2011

Quite often left sitting in the fruit bowl in favour of more exotic items is this amazing fruit. More should be known about the humble pear’s health boosting benefits!

Pears Lower Cholesterol.

Pears contain as much dietary fibre as beans. This is very good for lowering cholesterol. Pears contain Lignin which acts like Velcro by trapping cholesterol molecules in the intestine before they get absorbed into the bloodstream. Lignin cannot pass through the intestinal wall therefore it goes straight into the stool taking the cholesterol with it. Not many fruits measure up to pears with the amount of Lignin. They also contain pectin (which you add to jellies and jams to make them set ). Pectin is a soluble fibre which dissolves in the intestine forming a sticky gel like coating. This also binds to the cholesterol causing it to be eliminated with the stool.

Bone Food.

Pears contain Boron which can help prevent loss of bone calcium in post menopausal women. Women at this stage of life are at risk of Osteoporosis which is caused by gradual loss of minerals from the body.

Pears help with Memory and Alertness.

In tests of memory, perception and attention, people low in Boron did not perform as well as when they had higher amounts. Study done by researchers at the US Department of Agriculture found that reflexes and mental alertness improved when people were given additional Boron. You just need 3mg of Boron a day to help the loss of calcium and to keep the mind strong. While one pear contains 0.3mg of Boron, if you have at least five servings of a variety of fruit and vegetables including pears, you will get all the boron your body needs.
