Truely Remix or Just a Cover?
Making copies of the famous songs.
We’ve been seeing lately that there are more and more copies of the famous hits, songs that have marked eras of ’70’s, ’80’s and ’90’s and that trend goes on last twenty years. Some copies represent a truely remix of those more or less famous songs, but some are just a simple cover, a new band playin’ famous song note by note. As a successful remix I would point to Faith no more’s – I’m easy version, Red hot chili peppers’ – Higher ground, Joe Cocker’s – You can leave your hat on, Don’t let me be misunderstood, Alien Ant Farm’s – Smooth criminal, The Clash’s – I fought the law, Guns n’ roses’ – Knocking on heavens door, Kula Shaker’s – Hush e.t.c. Mentioning unsuccessful remixes and covers would take too much time, ’cause there are dozens of bands who took the shorter way to fame and glory by playing other’s songs note by note. As long as the authors are putting their own seal to the songs someone else made, I think making a remix is not a bad thing at all. If the remixer also changes a rhythm, not only playin’ it faster or slower, by transforming a pop song to a rock, or reggae, even jazz, it would make more sense, as long as the songs are not just being reproduced. The best example would be Joe Cocker’s version of Bob Marley’s song – Could you be loved, or his version of Bennie Benjamin’s – Don’t let me be misunderstood. ‘Till then we’ll always have a discussion whether it is a cover or a truely remix…

If it is not the original, it is a cover, no matter what changes are made.
