Do you know why certain foods we eat gives us gas? Read this article to find out.

Sometimes our small intestine is unable to digest certain varieties of food we eat.

Foods that are not digested by the small intestine is sent to the the colon. The colon contains bacteria. The bacteria feeds on the undigested food and a byproduct is produced which is gas.

When the bacteria has to feed on a lot of indigestible matter these microorganisms will produce large amounts of gas. The gas is then released from the body by means of burping or when we break wind (flatulence).

Listed below are examples of some foods which can cause gas in some people:

  • Beans
  • Artichokes
  • Asparagus
  • Broccoli
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Apples
  • Apricots
  • Bananas
  • Cheese
  • Milk
  • Barley
  • Flax seed
  • Oat bran

There are a variety of things one can do to stimulate proper functioning of the digestive system. One is to not drink while eating.

There’s a danger of drinking while you eat since the beverages you consume can weaken the stomach acids and digestive enzymes which are necessary to break down food. Try to drink your beverages 1 to 2 hours before and after meals.
