Giant Cherry Oatmeal Cookies

Giant cherry oatmeal cookies are energy-packed, budget-friendly, easy to make, take anywhere snacks that really do travel exceptionally well. They are brilliant as a breakfast substitute for busy people on the go or to simply enjoy as a light meal along with a cup of your favorite beverage (coffee, tea, milk etc) during a coffee break.

Giant Cherry Oatmeal Cookie Ingredients:

  • 2½ Cups (1250g) of Original Porridge Oats
  • 1½ Cups (195g) of Chopped Dried Cherries or Chopped Sweetened Dried Cranberries
  • 11/3 Cups (200g) of Sifted Plain Flour
  • 1 Cup (250g) of Softened Butter
  • ¾ Cup (165g) of Firmly Packed Soft Brown Sugar
  • ½ Cup (115g) of Caster Sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 Teaspoons of Mixed Spice
  • 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract
  • ¾ Teaspoon of Grated Orange Zest
  • ½ Teaspoon of Baking Powder
  • ¼ Teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda
  • ¼ Teaspoon of Freshly Ground Sea Salt

Note: If you would rather make your own custom mixed spices for this recipe then use:

  • 1 Teaspoon of Ground Cinnamon
  • ½ Teaspoon of Freshly Grated Nutmeg
  • ¼ Teaspoon of Allspice
  • ¼ Teaspoon of Ground Cloves or Ground Cardamom


  1. In a large mixing bowl cream together the butter, the soft brown sugar and the caster sugar until light and fluffy
  2. Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract and mix well
  3. In another mixing bowl combine the sifted plain flour, the original porridge oats, the mixed spice, the baking powder, the bicarbonate of soda and the salt
  4. Once combined gradually add the dry ingredients mixture to the creamed mixture and mix well
  5. Stir in the chopped dried cherries and the orange zest
  6. Preheat oven to 1900C
  7. Drop dough, ¼ cup at a time, about 7cm (2¾”) apart onto non-greased baking trays
  8. Press dough to form 10cm (4”) circles
  9. Transfer loaded baking trays to a preheated oven and bake at 1900C for about 9 – 12 minutes or until golden brown
  10. Once cooked remove the giant cherry oatmeal cookies from the oven and let stand for 2 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely
  11. When completely cooled transfer giant cherry oatmeal cookies to an airtight container ready for serving
