Sweet Orange Sherbet

published by Annie Hintsala on Jul 29, 2010

This recipe, intended for a large ice cream maker, will make a smooth, creamy, sweet old fashioned desert that is just lovely on a hot summer day. Or the middle of winter. Or fall. Or spring. Heck, this would be great on the moon. Enjoy this simple recipe and get your kids involved with the cranking of the ice cream maker, or the squeezing of the oranges.

Ingredients:
6 oranges

the zest from one orange

1 quart heavy whipping cream

½ quart (approximately) milk (fill the tank on the ice cream maker to the desired level, or manufacturers recommendation, which can vary on different machines).

1 ½ cups sugar

¼ teaspoon of vanilla (optional)

Thoroughly squeeze the juice from the 6 oranges and add it to the bin on the ice cream maker. From one of the oranges, lightly grate off the zest (the orange peel) being careful not to include the white pith.

Add the sugar and the zest to the orange juice already in the bin, and stir until the sugar is mostly dissolved. Add in the cream and then the milk, both being very cold, and then lightly stir the whole mixture together. Follow the directions on your ice cream maker and enjoy!

For a small change, add in 3 oranges and a cup of pureed strawberries instead of the 6 oranges.

This recipe is great with a chocolate syrup or chocolate shell topping.
