Prepare an apple pie so easily for family and friends.
Ingredients for pie crust:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup shortening
- 1/2 cup water

Method:
- In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in water until mixture forms a ball. Divide dough in half and shape into balls. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 4 hours (or even overnight).
- Roll out dough on a floured counter. Don’t overwork it. Use as directed in pie recipe.
Ingredients for apple pie filling:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 8 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced
Method:
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
- Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add water, white sugar and brown sugar. Bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let simmer.
- Place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, mounded slightly. Cover with a lattice work of crust. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust. Pour slowly so that it does not run off.
- Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft. Top with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.
Ingredients for caramel sauce:
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup superfine sugar
- 1 1/4 cups heavy cream
Method:
- Heat all ingredients together in a pan.
