Steamed Black Layer Cake Served with Grated Coconut: Secrets of Indonesian Cuisine Recipes

Try this delicious cake recipe. Great food for your entire family and it’s easy to prepare.

Ingredients

  • 500 g rice flour
  • 200 g sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1600 ml coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp lime water
  • 10 tbsp ash water
  • 50 ml pandanus leaf juice
  • 200 g grated coconut, mix with 1 tsp salt, steamed
  • Oil to grease

Method

  1. To make ash water: burn 1 bunch paddy straw into ash, solve with 50 ml water, sieve.
  2. Mix well rice flour, sugar, salt, coconut milk and lime water into batter into two parts. One part mix with ash water and the other pout pandanus leaf juice.
  3. Grease a square mould cake 20×20x3 cm, pours 5 tbsp ash batter and spread evenly, steam for 5 minutes, make sure the layers are even. Repeat the process until the batter used up with alternate layers of ash and pandanus batter. Continue steaming the whole layer cake for 30 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and allow cooling.
  5. Remove the layer cake from the mould, cut into pieces and serve with grated coconut.
  6. Transfer on to a serving dish and serve immediately

    I can’t wait to take a bite, I know this is delicious because I do love dishes laced with grated cocnut and coconut milk. We call this knid od dish as “GINATAAN…”

    That sounds delicious though I am not sure you can paddy straw in this country. Can that be left out?
