The Pumpkin Pie Alternative

published by CookiesandCakes on Oct 8, 2008

Following, is a recipe for an alternative to pumpkin pie. You can now enjoy the flavor without having to wait.

So, the leaves are changing colors and are beginning to fall from their trees. This is a for sure sign that Fall is here! For me, when I think of Fall I think of pumpkins, apples, crisp cool weather and BAKING!

Pumpkin pie is such a favorite treat of mine. However, sometimes I want the treat without having to take the time to bake it up! Here is an easy and tasty recipe for a pumpkin pie alternative. It is so easy and so much quicker than pumpkin pie and you can whip it up any time you want to!

Kitchen utensils you will need:

  • Cookie sheet or pizza pan
  • Aluminum foil (such as the no-stick kind)
  • A medium size bowl
  • Whisk
  • Spoon
  • Fork

Get ready for a taste of pumpkin pie, without the wait:

Pumpkin Pie Turnover

Ingredients

  • 1 Refrigerated piecrust
  • ½ Cup canned pumpkin*
  • 1/3 Cup brown sugar
  • 1 Tsp. almond or vanilla extract
  • ½ Tsp. pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 Smidge of salt

Icing Ingredients

  • ½ Cup powdered sugar
  • ½ Tsp. almond or vanilla extract
  • 1-2 Tbsp. milk

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Unroll the crust onto a foil lined cookie sheet. (Crust works best at unrolling when it is at room temperature; if any holes form in the crust, just press the dough back together with your fingertips)
  3. In a medium sized bowl, mix together pumpkin, brown sugar, extract, pumpkin pie spice & salt.
  4. Spoon the mixture onto ½ of the crust.
  5. Fold crust over the mixture.
  6. Go around the edges of the crust with a fork to seal them together. (This will prevent your fabulous filling from spilling out onto the pan)
  7. Bake turnover for about 25 minutes.
  8. While the turnover is baking, prepare your icing.
  9. Mix the powdered sugar, extract & milk in a small bowl. Let it sit until turnover is ready.
  10. With a spoon, drizzle the icing over the turnover while it is still warm.
  11. If you like nuts, sprinkle some that are chopped over the icing as soon as you drizzle it over the turnover. Almonds, pecans and walnuts would work well with this recipe!
  12. Using a knife, cut into triangular slices, like a pizza pie, serve warm and enjoy!

Tips and Ideas

For a warm apple turnover, you could omit the pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice and replace it with apple pie filling and cinnamon. You can serve this with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream! Get creative, if you have another favorite, like peach or blueberry, try it out. You can personalize this recipe to accommodate your families taste!

I sought out a pumpkin pie alternative because I love pumpkin so much the pie itself never satisfies my craving for pumpkin! Great recipe, I’m getting ready to make it now!
