Make Your Own Peppermint Liquor

published by coffeeadict on Dec 8, 2009

A perfect digestive aid but also very nice to consume on its own – try making your own peppermint liquor at home.

This is the easiest way to have a unique liquor you made yourself and with ingredients you simply grow in your garden. The best start is to pick some really nice and fresh peppermint leaves.

The best in flavour and the most fragrant ones as well are the early ones in spring, which are slightly smaller in size and lighter in colour. Pick one to two cups of mint leaves and cut them briefly or rip them apart into pieces. Mix the leaves with 3 cups of vodka or other clear schnapps with high alcohol content (approx. 40 vol. %) and not much of an own taste (not to spoil the nice peppermint taste) in a jar, close the lid and put in a sunny spot on the window sill to mature for approx. two weeks.

Shake well occasionally. Then filter the contents several times. Mix two cups of sugar well with one cup of water and bring to the boil. This mix must simmer very low for 5 to 10 minutes. If required, you can add food colouring for some real green colour. But the natural colour of the mint liquor looks pretty nice too; it’s olive green with a slight golden touch. You can also add some glycerin (which I don’t like) for thickening. Then put the mint vodka mix in a sterilised jar and pout the boiled sugary syrup over it. Now seal the jars quickly and put away in a cool and dry place for two to three weeks. The joy of sampling your own peppermint liquor will reimbursed you for any effort and sweat you might have put into it. Enjoy alcohol responsibly!

I’ve made other liquers, but never thought to try mint. I might give this one a go.
