Three Easy Non-alcoholic “Mocktails” to Try for Spring
With swimsuit season fast approaching, you need to be careful that you’re not drinking too many calories! Cocktails pack a punch in more ways than one, so try these easy low-cal "mocktails."
Just Google the words “cocktail calories” and you’ll be knocked loopy at the amount of calories a seemingly innocent cocktail can have. Here are a few examples:
Pina Colada – 526 calories
Margarita – 453 calories
Screwdriver – 220 calories
Martini – 413 calories
A shot of liquor – gin, rum, vodka, whiskey – contains approximately 100-115 calories each on its own. Just think, going out for a couple margaritas after work can be a calorie nightmare!
But you can enjoy a beverage as long as you drink smart. Here are a few tips:
Try a diet Cuba Libre – a shot of white rum in a tall glass with ice, a squeeze of lime, and a topping of diet cola.
Use diet tonic water – an often overlooked mixer. In fact, diet tonic water is great on its own with no booze added (but you can add half a shot of gin for 55 calories).
Use portion control at the bar, just like on your plate. Tell the bartender that you’re watching calories and that you’d like her to divide your shot of the hard stuff into two glasses, then fill them both up with your favorite diet mixer. Most bartenders are happy to do this – and a side benefit is that you get two drinks for the price of one!
Skip the booze in total. Try this neat trick – order a glass of half each diet cola and soda water, with a fat squeeze of lime. It’s deliciously refreshing and not so cloyingly sweet … plus you won’t be consuming so much caffiene to keep you up too late. Try this with orange juice or cranberry juice watered down with soda water as well… those juices can add a high calorie punch, so enjoy them in moderation as well. This trick is great to get you out of the peer pressure that can happen when you tell your bar buddies that you’re cutting back on calories… they’ll say “Oh you don’t need to diet, go ahead and have a drink with me!” These great “mocktails” look like the real thing – a real screwdriver or real Cuba Libre – so they’ll be none the wiser.
You can also trick your friends into drinking lite – at the supermarket, buy a bottle of rum extract, and add a teaspoon of that to some fresh limeade (made with Splenda, of course) mixed with club soda. Tell them it’s a “skinny daquiri.” Chances are, they’ll love it!
Use these tips, and you’ll be looking stunning in your swimsuit without falling down drinking!
