How to Make Dandelion Root Tea

published by rwlovett on Aug 27, 2009

This will explain step by step on how to make dandelion root tea.

In order to make dandelion tea you will need the following;
gardening shovel, plastic bag, knife, sugar, water, rubber band
,and a coffee filter.

  1. Go outside and take your gardening shovel and plastic bag.
  2. Look on the ground and identify a dandelion, a dandelion has
jagged leaves, and a yellow flower (when young) and a seeded flower
    (when mature).
  3. Use the gardening shovel and dig up the dandelion, you will
only need the root for the tea, but the head, shaft, and leaves may
    be used in a salad.
  4. Put dandelions in the plastic bag.
  5. Go back inside and take the dandelions out of the plastic bag
and remove the roots from the dandelions if you have not done so already.
  6. Rinse off the roots to get all of the dirt off of them.
  7. Pull off all the root hairs (the things coming off the root).
  8. Chop up the roots using your knife, the smaller the better.
  9. Fill a pot with water, and start boiling it.
  10. Put the roots in a coffee filter. Place the rubber band around
the filter so that the roots don’t fall out.
  11. Put the tea bag into the pot of water.
  12. Watch occasionally, and when the water changes colors (light
brown) then you know it is ready.  Or you can taste test it.
  13. When the tea is ready throw the tea bag away and pour into
a glass, then add as much sugar as you think is necessary.
  14. Enjoy!

NOTE:  It is best to harvest roots in mid April to early August.  No later
than the 15th or so.
