Nutmeg and mixed spice are widely used throughout the Caribbean, where the ingredients of mixed spice are readily available. Nutmed spice is egg shaped, brown and about an inch long.

Powdered nutmeg and mixed spice are not only popular in the Caribbean, however. Many homes outside of the Caribbean have a nutmeg mill or nutmeg grater, which is used to produce freshly ground nutmeg for use at table, or in regular cooking. The nutmeg mill makes things a little easier on the chef and nutmeg lovers, because it grinds large amounts of nutmeg and also stores the nutmeg easily.

Nutmeg was once carried by Europeans as a sign of wealth and nutmeg graters were a fashion accessory. Then, diners at fancy restaurants grated their own nutmeg.

A nutmeg grater is smaller than a nutmeg mill and doesn’t have storage space. The nutmeg mill also looks good displayed on the counter or table.
