Powdered Milk? Yuck
Powdered milk – friend or foe?
I know, I know! Powdered milk is yucky! You are preaching to the choir, honey.
I grew up oldest of 8 siblings and my dad taught Jr. high English in Utah so we weren’t exactly living high on the hog (and rarely splurged on pork).
While I know powdered milk doesn’t taste great it does have major good points. Did you know that powdered milk is higher in calcium than regular milk? That point alone is huge. Powdered milk is easy to store. It comes useful in a pinch when you are baking and out of milk.You can sneak powdered milk into your baking and cooking. No one will know. You can stretch your milk by adding a little powdered milk to the milk jug.
When the scouts went on a 50 miler last summer, they packed dry cereal with dry milk in a sandwich bag. When they were ready to eat, they simply added water and shook it up!
How much to store:For 1 person 3 cups a day for 1 year = 50 to 100 lbs depending on type of milk and brand.
Types of Powdered Milk
Instant- Easier to mix with spoon or blender because it dissolves in water more easily More expensive than non-instant.Non-instant – More difficult to mix than instant must mix with hot water and allow time to chill Less expensive that instant lasts longer than instant many brands are not fortified with Vitamin A or D
Milk alternative cannot be used to make cheese, cottage cheese, or yogurt because it contains no milk solids, may not contain all the nutrients of real milk and it may contain additives you many not want.
Ingredients
- Hot Cocoa Mix 4 C.
- Instant Dry Milk 1 1/2 C.
- Sugar1 C
- Cocoa Powder 1 1/2 Tsp.
- Salt
Optional:
- 1 C. Coffee Creamer
- 3 Tbsp. Powdered Vanilla
Method
Mix all ingredients will and store in an air tight container. Mix 1/2 c mix with 1 c hot waterMakes enough for 6 quarts or 25 1 cup servings.
