A list of interesting facts about lemons.

1. Lemons are often used in culinary aspects such for making lemonade or soft drink, Lemon slices and lemon rind is also used as a garnish for both food and drink while Lemon zest is used to add some flavour to a variety of dishes and it is known that a hot lemon drink will help cure a cold or flu.

2. Since the Middle ages it has been traditional to serve a slice of lemon with fish because back then the people believed the fruit’s juice would dissolve any bones accidently swallowed.

3. Lemons are high in vitamin C and prevent scurvy, a disease that causes lose teeth, bleeding gums and aching joints.

4. Adding a squeeze of lemon juice to a fruit salad or sliced fruit will prevent fruits like apples and pears from going brown and will also add a nutritional bonus.

5. There are many types of lemons such as the Meyer lemon, originally from China, Eureka lemons which are very juicy and grown commercially, Libson Lemons which have a smoother surface than most lemons and also are seedless.

6. There are two main varieties of lemons, sweet and acid, the main acid lemons are Eureka and Lisbon’s which are grown commercially while sweet lemons are grown in people’s own gardens.

7. Lemon is especially useful for people on diets for example, if you are not drinking as much water as you should be, cut up a few slices of lemon and place them in a jug of water then you might be inclined to drink more water, you can also replace vinegar dressings with a good squeeze of lemon on your favourite salad.

8. The next time you have stained fingernails place them in a bowl of lemon juice for 5 minutes which should clean them. Lemon is incorporated into most cleaning detergents for this very reason.

9. If you are about to juice a lemon there are several ways you can make sure you will get the most juice you can, you can put the lemon in the microwave for about 15 seconds which should heat a little and soften or you can simply roll the lemon on a clean surface for a few short seconds, this should also make your lemon easier to squeeze.

10. When selecting a lemon from the supermarket look for these things, that the lemon is firm and has a bright yellow colour that they are quite big and look ripe and juicy
