Italian Style Egyptian Rice Recipe

Egyptian rice with a strong Italian flavor and aroma.

  • 2 cups Egyptian or sushi rice
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 2 Tbsp canola oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/2-1 tsp basil 
  • dash of garlic powder
  • pinch of turmeric (optional spice to give yellow color)
  • 3 cups water

Melt butter in a large pot and add oil. Wash and drain rice.  Add rice to melted butter and oil.  Let rice soak up butter and oil for approximately 1 minute while adding spices. Stir in spices and add water. Cover and cook on high until water comes to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low.  Simmer for 20 minutes and then turn off burner.  Let sit for an additional 10 minutes with the lid on before serving.

    What is Egyptian rice like? I am guessing it would be short grain and sticky.

    @ sciofa, yes you are correct about the rice. Egyptian rice is basically the same type of rice used for sushi. So the easiest way to find it is to go to an Asian store. Sometimes grocery stores have it too but it isn’t always marked clearly as sushi rice unless you speak Japanese :)
