Use a claw cracker for Dungeness crab.Alaskan king crab, snow crab, blue crab, red rock crab and Dungeness crabs are just a few varieties of crab sold at seafood markets. Served in a restaurant or cooked at home, whole crabs need to be cracked open before the sweet, succulent meat can be eaten. Crab claw tools can be purchased separately or in seafood tool sets.- Usually made of chrome plated stainless steel, crab claw crackers are built for strength. Claw crackers are similar to nut crackers in design, but heavier. These tools crack the claws with the serrations located on the inner edges when the handles are pressed together.
- Sometimes a mallet is needed to crack crab claws, especially with larger species such as the Alaskan king crab. Usually made of wood, the mallet is used by placing the claws on a cutting board and striking the claw to break the hard shell. This is usually done before the meal is served.
- Crab forks are long and thin with two small tines. They are used to dig the meat out of the cracked claw. Usually made of stainless steel, some crab forks have rounded finger rests in the middle for easy handling and spooned ends for scooping.
