Anybody who has had fried fish knows that it’s one of the best ways to have fish.  Fortunately there are some fried fish recipes that can be as healthy for you as baked or poached fish.  These fried fish recipes still give you the Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids while still allowing you to take advantage of some of the delicious fried fish taste.

The kind of oil you cook with makes your fried fish recipes unhealthy.  If you change up your oil (and perhaps even the breading) you’re going to have some great fried fish recipes that will be healthy for you.

The Right Oil

Olive oil is the healthiest choice for your fried fish recipes because there isn’t cholesterol in olive oil.  For an eight ounce fish use 2 tablespoons of oil.

Better Breading Batter

The only thing the oil is for in fried fish recipes is to cook the fish.  Not the taste. Not anything more than for keeping your fish from sticking to your skillet.  That means you’re going to need a breading that doesn’t absorb your cooking oil.

For a regular fried fish recipe prepare your meal accordingly:  Fifteen minutes before you’re ready to cook your fish you’re going to need to prepare a bowl of milk, beat some eggs in another bowl and have a cornmeal/flour concoction.  Set your fish in the milk turning once so both sides get covered.  Keep your fish in the milk for fifteen minutes.  When you’re ready to cook take out the fish and let excess milk drip. Next dip the fish into your eggs (again, make sure the entire fish is covered.

Your cornmeal/flower will be half a cup of cornmeal and half a cup of flower mixed together well.  Once your fish is covered by milk and eggs cover your fish adequately with the breading.  The cornmeal works to keep oil from being absorbed by the breading.

Spicing Up Your Fried Fish Recipe

There are ways to spice up your fried fish recipes that only consist of adding a few of your favorite seasonings.  Something like lemon pepper and/or cayenne seasonings are great ways to add a depth of flavors to your fried fish recipes.  There are even some pre-made seasoning packets you can find at the store if you’re interested.

Cooking Your Fried Fish Recipe

On a non-stick skillet put two tablespoons of your olive oil on the pan.  Cook your fish on medium heat.  If you’re using an electric pan, cook at 375 degrees.  Cook for two to four minutes depending on how thick your fish is.  You’ll know your fish is cooked all the way through when you can insert a fork and see all white.  When serving, use a spatula that allows any excess oil to drip from your fried fish.

If you enjoy fried fish this is a recipe that will let you eat healthy yet still have one of your favorite recipes.  Try a few different fried fish recipes by mixing in different seasonings and using different fish.  You’ll love this great new healthy addition to your menu.
