Drunken Meat Balls

These meatballs have a special red wine sauce but have no worries, you won’t really get drunk eating these tasty goodies unless your have a cocktail on the side!

Meat Balls:

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • ½ lb. ground pork
  • ¼ cup bread crumbs
  • ½ cup grated onions
  • 1 Tbl. Finely chopped parsley
  • 1-1/2 tsp. salt
  • ¼ tsp. pepper
  • 1 Tbl. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • ¼ cup shortening
  • 1-1/2 cups red wine sauce (see below)

Method

Preheat oven to 300%. Grease 11×7x1-1/2″ baking pan. In mixing bowl, combine all ingredients except shortening and red wine sauce. Mix well, shape in to 1″ balls. Melt shortening in large skillet, brown meat balls well on all sides. Arrange meat balls in pan; pour red wine sauce over them. Cover with aluminum foil; bake in preheated oven for 1 hour.

Red Wine Sauce

  • 1/3 cup butter
  • ¼ cup grated onion
  • 1/3 cup pre-sifted flour
  • 1-1/2 cups dry red wine
  • ½ cup catsup
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 1/3 tsp. pepper
  • 1 dash of garlic salt
  • 1 brown sugar
  • 1 Tbl. Prepared mustard
  • 1 dash of ground cloves

Method

Melt butter in saucepan; sauté onion until golden. Sprinkle with flour; gradually stir in wine; cover over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened and smooth. Stir in remaining ingredients; simmer for 5 minutes.

Makes about 2-1/2 cups
