The Food of Champions: Grilled Rib Eye Steak
Enjoy the taste of rib eye steak after a long day at work. Just retreat to your back yard and start grilling.
There is nothing is better after a day at work than throwing a rib eye steak on the grill but before you get started you have to know how to grill rib eye steaks on an outdoor grill properly to ensure that it will be a superb dinner. Rib eye steak is prime meat with super flavor so you want to get it right. Grilling rib eye steaks is not all that different from cooking any other steak. You may be thinking that it takes no more effort than placing your steak on the grill but there are a few tricks you can still learn to be successful grilling one steak or a dozen. The first thing you should do is choose a top quality steak with just the right amount of marbling in the meat and rib eye fits this bill perfectly.

Before you start your grilling make sure your steak is completely thawed, if it’s not it may not cook even or will certainly take longer than it should. You can just use a seasoning of choice and although rib eye steak has a superb taste on its own with just salt and pepper you can add flavored seasoning.

When your steak is just about ready to place on the grill you can heat up your gas grill to the temperature that you will need to cook your steak. If you are using a gas grill you will find that gas grills are ready when you are, there is usually a thermometer to tell you when it is heated. A gas grill is the easiest to set the temperature on but if you have a charcoal grill you will achieve a different taste than on a gas grill and some say it is for the better.

If you are using a charcoal grill you can add wood chips for extra flavor but make sure you have soaked them before their added. Using a charcoal grill take longer to make sure the coals are burning evenly before you start and there should be a white ash covering on top. You also need to pay a little closer attention when cooking on charcoal; you don’t want any flare ups to char your meat. Charcoal is ready when it glows throughout the grill and your steak should sizzle when you place the steak on the grill. You can judge the heat in a charcoal grill by placing your hand above the grill approximately five to six inches. This will give you an idea of the intensity of the heat coming from the coals.
Your rib eye steak should take anywhere from three to five minutes on each side. This will depend on how thick or thin your steak is, if it is a thick steak it will go closer to six minutes but if it’s a thin steak then it would be closer to three minutes. Regardless of what type of grill you’re using don’t let the flames reach your steak to char it. If you want the grill cross marks on your steak turn it on a 45 degrees angle. The best way to judge if you’re hoping to achieve the ideal steak is to use a thermometer. A rare steak will heat to 120 degrees in the center, a medium rare will run at 130 to 135 degrees, a medium will run at 140 to 145 degrees and a well done steak should run around 160 to 165 degrees. The advantage of using a thermometer is that it can tell you the exact time in which to flip it over and then when it is done.
