Vegetarian Meat Substitutes Available at Walmart

published by Mom the Muse on Aug 2, 2012

Trying to find vegetarian meat substitutes can be difficult and expensive, but there are a few products available even at Walmart.

My daughter has recently become a vegetarian, and although she is mostly content without meat products, sometimes, she likes to indulge in a “chicken” nugget or a “burger” patty.  These are a few of the products that she has tried.

The first is Morningstar chicken nuggets.  These have become a fast favorite, and honestly, to me, they taste like poor quality regular chicken nuggets, like those found in many school cafeteria.  The taste and texture aren’t great, but not as off-putting as I had expected.  For those occasional meat cravings, they are recommended.

The next product found at Walmart was the Boca burger patty.  The first we prepared, we simply fried in a skillet.  When asked what it tasted like, my daughter said, “nothing.”  That isn’t exactly what I am going for when I eat a burger.  However, the second time, we tried sauteeing mushrooms and onions along with it, and this made the whole experience a little more palatable.

The third item tried was a complete success.  Although “Amy’s” burrito technically does not feature a meat substitute, it did come with ample taste, was filling and the texture was very normal.  As a source of protein, which is easy to prepare, this will probably become  staple item in our freezer.

So if you were wondering about any of these products, I hope that this short review has been helpful.  Good luck on your quest for better health!
