Ramen Noodles: A Means of Eating Cheaply in a Rough Economy

published by Aeris Blue on Aug 8, 2009

Everyone’s going through a rough time right now due to the economy. It’s neither very tasty nor healthy to eat cheap. Sure, you can always grab a .99 double cheeseburger from Burger King, but sometimes you’ve got to change things up a bit.

Everyone is going through a rough time right now due to the economy. It’s neither very tasty nor healthy to eat cheap. Sure, you can always grab a .99 double cheeseburger from Burger King, but sometimes you’ve got to change things up a bit.

Ramen Noodles are probably the single most cheapest food item that’s available in any supermarket. My local Walmart sells they’re packages for about .16 each!

Ramen Noodles: Commonly Known As The Classic Stoner Method

Ingredients

  • 1 Package Oriental flavored Ramen Noodles
  • 1 Slice of Kraft Cheese
  • 1 Microwave-safe Bowl
  • Water

Method

Take 1 package of Oriental flavored Ramen Noodles and crush the noodles with the palm of your hand until they are thoroughly crunched up. Open the package and pour the noodles into your microwave-safe bowl. Be sure to grab the flavoring packet and set it aside.

Fill the bowl with water, making sure all of the noodles are submerged. Place the bowl in your microwave and set the time for 3 minutes. (Tip – You may wish to cover the bowl with a paper towel in case the water boils and overflows)

The bowl will be very hot. Drain the noodles using any method at your disposal. I have a small-hole collander, so that’s what I use. Place the noodles back in the bowl and then take the flavoring packet that you set aside and pour it into the noodles. Stir until mixed thoroughly.

Add the slice of Kraft cheese. You may wish to break up the slice into small pieces so that it melts more quickly. Stir it all together and enjoy. It’s like Asian Macaroni! Careful! It might be hot!

Alternative Ideas:

- Try the Chicken flavored Ramen and use Swiss cheese instead!
- Be Healthy! Add peas or broccoli florets. Almost any vegetable would work!

A More Grown-up Approach: Ramen Noodle Shrimp Stir-fry

Make the noodles as described above (oriental is preferred, but it’s your choice) and then stir-fry them up with some shrimp, peas, water chestnuts, etc. Add spices like ginger and use soy or teriyaki for some Asian flair!

Great article! Those of us who spent any time in university or college will attest to the ease and delicious taste of ramen. I highly recommend the chicken flavour with some peas and corn added to it. You can buy large bags of frozen corn and peas quite cheaply as well.

When I try using cheese on Ramen it never comes out right… gives it a weird texture sometimes. I like to make Chicken flavor Ramen with long noodles and lots of broth; add basil, parsley, garlic pepper, and onion powder! I make it anytime I feel like I have a cold coming on, and it knocks it right out.

Elanor MathesonIt isn’t really high in calories, considering. As a single meal, though not very filling, it encompasses a little less than 1/3 of your daily calories. So in that particular instance it’s not that bad. It is EXTREMELY high in sodium, and since the noodles are fried, its pretty high in fat as well.
It’s a good base, though. You can add things to it and make a larger dish (add meat, veggies) and then split up the badness between servings so it becomes more reasonable.
