Simple cooking for any one who wants to save money.

Red Cabbage with apple sauce (serves 4-6)

This is a Dutch recipe and is loved by childeren.

Ingredients

  • 1 red cabbage
  • 200-250 gram potatoes for each person
  • 1-1.5 kilo cooking apples
  • 2 cloves
  • maple syrup
  • salt
  • raisins (optional)
  • minced meat balls with gravy already made (optional)
  • cinnamon
  • sugar

Method

  1. Peel and cut the apples and cook them in little water, for about 10 minutes.
  2. Peel the potatoes and cut them in even parts. The smaller you cut them the shorter they need to cook.
  3. Slaughter the cabbage and take off the outside leaves.
  4. Cut the cabbage in strips and put in a pan.
  5. Add as little water as needed (the more water you add to vegetables the less vitamin C you left with)
  6. Add the syrup (a good squeeze), cloves, salt and raisins
  7. Cook for about 20-25 minutes
  8. Cook the potatoes in the mean time with little water and some salt.
  9. When the apples are done, puree them add plenty of sugar and a pinch of cinnamon. Set aside or in the fridge until the rest of the food is ready.
  10.  Dish out.

Tip: You can make the apple sauce the day before. You can also make this with curly cale (leave out the raisins) and add smoked bacon while you cook the curly cale.
