How to Make Homemade Tzatziki with Organic Fair Trade or Local Ingredients

published by Mark Gordon Brown on Jun 26, 2011

Making your own healthy homemade Tzatziki from wholesome organic local or fair trade ingredients is a snap with this simple recipe. Enjoy some this summer or year round.

Tzatziki is a wonderful sauce that comes to us from Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. This sauce can be used on such exotic food things as kafta and falafel (exotic, at least, if you live in North American away for major urban centers), however it also makes a great salad dressing, sauce for potato salad, and taste great on store bought frozen burritos in lieu of sour cream.

Ingredients for Homemade Tzatziki

1 Cup Plain Homemade or Locally Produced Organic Yogurt

1/4 Cup Locally Grown or Fair Trade Organic Shredded Cucumber

1 Locally Grown or Fair Trade Organic Garlic Clove

2 tsp Fair Trade Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil

1/4 tsp Fair Trade Freshly Ground Sea Salt

1/4 tsp Fair Trade Freshly Ground Black Pepper

Preparation of Homemade Tzatziki

Crush the garlic with the flat side of a large knife or with a garlic press. Drain any excess liquid from the shredded cucumber. Combine all ingredients and stir well. For a smoother consistency use a food processor or emulsion blender, such as The Healthmaster or Ninja, Cover and chill thoroughly.  Store unused Tzatziki in the refrigerator.

Author’s note: I put tzatziki on almost everything that eat when I am not putting a chutney on it.  You can use it as a dip or in sandwiches in place of mayo!
