"Pot luck" – the literal translation – is an American custom, which in my opinion, this country would quietly take root! At potluck parties, such as a summer barbecue or the office Christmas party, each guest brings a dish with. This relieves the host, offers diners plenty of choice and awakens the ambition of the cooks:
