Gluten Free Living: Apple BBQ Sauce

published by Jeremy James Noye on Aug 12, 2009

A variation of the BBQ sauce from Recipe 1.

The combination of pork and apple can be extremely delicious. Here is a yummy sauce that can be used for for almost any pork dish. This sauce matures into another world of flavour after a few days, so make it in advance for a backyard BBQ or dinner party.

Apple BBQ Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 large white onion, very finely chopped
  • 2 large garlic cloves, very finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup ketchup style chili sauce
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp honey or dijon mustard (make sure it’s gluten free)
  • 1 tbsp Tamari sauce (gluten free soy sauce alternative)
  • 1 large macintosh or cortland apple, cored and put in a food processor with skins

Method

  1. Put olive oil in medium sized saucepan on medium heat. Once oil is hot add onions. Fry onions, stirring often, until fragrant, about 6 minutes. Add garlic and fry another 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. Add all of the other ingredients and leave on medium heat for approximately 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Once the sauce is simmering reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for another 15 minutes. Make sure to leave the saucepan uncovered as you want the sauce to reduce.
  3. If you don’t want any pieces of apple in your sauce then now is a good time to put the sauce in a blender for a couple of seconds. Whether or not you do this, simmer for another 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Once the sauce has reduced a bit take it off the heat and put into mason jars or another storage container. In an airtight container this sauce will be good for up to six weeks. Just make sure to keep it refrigerated!
