Homemade Tomato Sauce
Making your own tomato sauce has a lot of benefits. For one thing, you get to control the consistency-thick, thin, sweet, salty, mild, etc. Also, you can cut the excess sodium or other additives that are sometimes incorporated in commercially prepared sauces. Here are three different ways of preparing tomato sauce: long simmered, barely-cooked, and raw.
Long Simmered Tomato Sauce
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1 can crushed tomatoes
- 2 cups water
- 1 can tomato paste
- 3 leaves fresh basil leaves
- 2 cloves garlic, crushed
- 1 tsp salt
- 1tsp ground black pepper
Method
- Sauté onions in a large saucepan over medium to high heat.
- Add crushed tomatoes, water, tomato paste, basil, garlic, salt, and pepper.
- Simmer for 2 hrs or until the desired thickness is obtained. Make sure to switch to low heat when the mixture comes to a boil.
Barely Cooked Tomato Sauce
Ingredients
- ¼ cup olive oil
- 6 tomatoes, chopped
- 3 onions, minced
- 2 green bell peppers, minced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
Method
- Heat oil over medium heat.
- Add tomatoes, onions, green bell pepper, and garlic.
- Add salt and pepper to taste.
- Cover and simmer for 30 minutes.
Raw Tomato Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 kilogram ripe tomatoes, seeded and diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ cup chopped fresh basil
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- ½ cup olive oil
Method
- Toss tomatoes, garlic, basil, salt and black pepper, red pepper flakes and olive oil together in one bowl.
- Let stand at room temperature for up to 2 hours, stirring occasionally.

Oh,this is so much better than the sauce from the supermarkets!I tried to make it a few times, but the only thing that annoys me is that when I cook it,it keeps splashing a lot out of the bowl.:)
