Red Onion Hot Dog Sauce

Red Onion Hot Dog Sauce just like from a hot dog cart. Easy recipe to dress up any red hot! Red Onion Hot Dog sauce tastes great on sausage sandwiches and burgers too.

Note: Red Onion Hot Dog Sauce will freeze well. Store airtight.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion, halved and sliced thin
  • 1 1/2 tsp  vegetable oil
  • 4 c water divided
  • 2 tbs tomato paste
  • 1/4 c vinegar
  • 2 tsp corn syrup (or use sugar)
  • 1 tsp cornstarch dissolved in 1/4 c of the water
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (or black pepper)

Method

Soften the sliced onion in the vegetable oil in a heavy saucepan. Add the water, tomato paste, vinegar and corn syrup or sugar. Bring to a boil, turn heat down and simmer until the onion is cooked through. Add the cornstarch mixture and bring back to a boil, stirring constantly. Seasonthe Red Onion Hot Dog Sauce  to taste with salt, black pepper and red pepper flakes.

Note: tomato ketchup can be used in place of the tomato paste, vinegar and sweetener. It contains the same ingredients.
