Top Nine Ways to Cook Potatoes

Potatoes are a cheap and versatile main course, side dish or treat. Below you will find my personal top nine ways to cook potatoes, healthy or not.

Fries

  1. Peel Potatoes and Slice it into 1/4 inch slices length wise, and then slice the wedges once more for thin French fries.
  2. Heat oil in a deep pan, or warm up the deep fryer
  3. Add potatoes once the oil is very hot (if not hot enough the potatoes will be soggy and greasy)
  4. Stir potatoes until golden
  5. Drain on paper towels or napkins. Season with salt and pepper, or garlic salt for a different taste

Mashed Potatoes

  1. Peel and cut potatoes into cubes
  2. Bring potatoes to a boil in a large pot (add salt if needed)
  3. Let potatoes simmer for 20 minutes until soft
  4. Drain potatoes
  5. Heat ½ cup of milk with ½ butter (you can also substitute with cream cheese or sourcream)
  6. Add butter and milk to potatoes chunks, and use a potato masher, potato rice or mill to achieve your preferred consistency.
  7. Season to taste

Baked Potatoes

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F
  2. Was potato and pierce twice with a fork or knife
  3. Bake 60 mins or until tender
  4. Add toppings, sour cream, chives, cheese, butter etc.

Oven Roasted Potatoes

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F
  2. Without peeling, cut big potatoes in two, smaller potatoes left whole
  3. Place potatoes on baking dish or cookie sheet
  4. Drizzle with olive oil or butter. Add any seasoning
  5. Roast potatoes uncovered for 1 hour, or until soft and golden brown

Pancakes

  1. Grate potatoes and onions
  2. Mix potatoes, onion, 1 egg and 2 tablespoon of flour
  3. Heat 3 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan
  4. Form potato pancakes in your preferred size and place in the pan
  5. Cook until golden, then flip to cook the other side

Hash browned Potatoes

  1. Peel and shred potatoes
  2. Mix together potatoes, a shopped up onion and seasoning
  3. Heat frying pan with 2 tablespoons of butter
  4. Add potatoes to the frying pan and cook for 15 minutes
  5. When bottom is golden brown, flip upside down and cook for another 10 mins
  6. Serve with cheese, ketchup or salsa

Scalloped Potatoes

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F
  2. Melt 1/3 cup butter in sauce pan with 3 garlic cloves
  3. Add 1 cup of cream and bring to a simmer. Add any seasonings
  4. Wash, peel, and slice potatoes fairly thinly
  5. Layer the potato slices in a baking dish while sandwiching between layers of sauce
  6. Bake covered for 75 mins. Poke potatoes to test for tenderness

Potato Chips

  1. Heat oil in a deep frying pan or heavy pot on the stovetop.
  2. Slice potatoes as thinly as possible
  3. Cook small amount of chips at a time to avoid them clumping together
  4. Once chips turn golden, stir or flip upside down to ensure even cooking on both sides
  5. Once cooked, remove and blot with paper towels to sop up extra oil
  6. Season as desired and serve

Stuffed Potatoes/Jacket Potatoes

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F
  2. Poke holes in the potato and rub with butter
  3. Cook for 45 mins in the oven
  4. Let cool for 15 mins
  5. Cut potatoes in half and scoop out some of the inside of the potatoes
  6. Place innards in a bowl and and add butter, salt, pepper, and mix thoroughly
  7. Stir in cheese, bacon, sour cream, chives, and seasonings
  8. Fill potatoes with the mixture and bake at 375°F for another 20 mins or until golden brown/cheese melted
