Healthy Snacks for Healthy Living: Nuts

published by SharifaMcFarlane on Dec 11, 2010

Healthy snacks and regular meals are an essential part of healthy living. Persons who eat healthy snacks and take their meals at regular times are less likely to overeat than those who miss meals.

Healthy snacks are foods that are low in fat and sugar and give you an energy boost to keep your body going in between regular meals. Healthy snacks also add extra vitamins and other nutrients to your body. Healthy snacks can also help keep your blood insulin levels steady.

The food pyramid places nuts together with seeds. Adding nuts to a daily diet reduces the risk of colon cancer in women.

Persons who eat nuts daily have up to 50% less heart attacks than persons who only eat nuts once a month. Nuts are a good source of Vitamin E, copper, magnesium, folic acid and arginine.

In a study done at Loma Linda University, persons who consumed nuts daily for several weeks were found to have alterations in the composition of their blood. These alterations would give them a reduced risk of developing heart disease. The amino acid arginine, Vitamin E, copper, folic acid and magneiusm all have a significant role in preventing heart disease.

Nuts can be enjoyed fresh or roasted as a snack, but most nuts are high calorie, so measure out your servings beforehand so you are less tempted to overindulge. One serving of mixed nuts is about 30 grams and supplies the body with about 178 calories of energy.

Nuts such as peanuts and almonds can be purchased in bulk. If you have space you can even grow your own peanuts.

Homemade granola bars and homemade trail mix will save you a lot of money. You can buy the ingredients for less money than the packaged trail mix would cost. When you make your own granola bar at home, you can control the amount of fat that goes into it.

You can make a trail mix by mixing toasted oat cereal with your favorite nut or nuts and your favorite dried fruit. Many dried fruits are available such as cranberries, mango, pineapple, and raisins. Walnuts, peanuts, hazelnuts, pecans and/or pine nuts can be added to the mix.

    Thanks Strategy.
Star you are right. Some people are allergic to only one type of nut while other people are allergic to all nuts.
In some people the reacton is instantaneous. Their lips may start to swell, they may start to itch or turn red. Nut butters, etc. aren’t good for people with nut allergies.
