Friendship Bread – The Secret is Out
This bread recipe has been around for ever. I received a “starter” from a friend and discovered all of the ways to make this super moist, super tasty bread. It is now my families favorite sweet bread recipe. Here is the recipe to make your own starter. See my other recipes for variations on this wonderful classic bread.
Step 1 – Get a plastic bowl or a gallon Ziploc bag.
Step 2 – Add one cup of flour, one cup of milk and one cup of sugar and one package yeast.
Step 3 – Leave it alone for 3 days out on the counter, not in the refrigerator. This will allow it to start to ferment and work its magic.
Step 4 – On days 4 and 5, stir the mixture or squish the bag.
Step 5 – On day 6, add 1 cup of flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup of milk.
Step 6 – On days 7-9, stir the mixture or squish up the bag.
Step 7 – Get ready to make some magic. On day 10, add to the bowl 1 ½ cups of flour, 1 ½ cups of sugar and 1 ½ cups of milk. Then take one cup of the batter and get ready to make your bread. The basic recipe is:
1 cup of batter
3 eggs
1 cup oil
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 cup sugar
½ cup milk
½ teaspoon vanilla
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
2 cups flour
1 large box instant vanilla pudding
½ teaspoon salt
Mix all ingredients together. Generously grease 2 large loaf pans. Then dust the pans with a mixture of ¼ cup of sugar and 1 ½ teaspoon cinnamon. Divide the batter into the two pans and sprinkle with the remaining cinnamon sugar. Bake at 350 for apx. 60 minutes. Check with toothpick. It may need 10 more minutes. Remove from pans after 10 minutes to a cooling rack.
You can either make four of these recipes or you can give three ‘starters’ to friends along with a copy of this recipe.
