 Vegetarian Spicy Dicey Tofu – A Quick and Easy Recipe

Nutritional Value and Health Benefits of Tofu

Tofu is a good source of dietary calcium, protecting against bone weakness, loss, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Tofu is also very high in iron, protein, minerals and plant component called isoflavones. Isoflavones can  protect women in menopause can be beneficial in fending off prostate cancer in men. Tofu also contains antioxidants manganese, copper and selenium. These nutrients contribute to maintaining energy levels. Anti-oxidants’ are also believed to help prevent against a myriad of cancers by protecting DNA. Eating tofu can help fight against a variety of health conditions such as heart disease and cancer.

 

Ingredients

·         packet of extra firm tofu (cut into cubes)

·         big onion (chopped finely)

·         1 big tomato (diced)

·         1 stalk cilantro (chopped finely)

·         2 tbsp chilli paste

·         1tbsp soya sauce

·         1tbsp sesame oil

·         Salt as required

·         Oil for frying

·         1/4 tsp turmeric powder

·         1 tsp chilli powder

 

 

Method

1        Rub in 1tsp of salt, chilli powder, turmeric and sesame oil gently into the tofu and marinate for 5 min.

2        In a pan, heat 1 tbsp oil, fry the onions and tomatoes for 3 min.

3        Add chilli paste and  fry under low fame until you can see the oil surfacing

4        This can take a while. You could start frying the tofu in another pan until all sides turn slightly brown.

5        Place fried tofu in a plate lined with kitchen paper to strain off excess oil

6        When the oil starts surfacing , add soya sauce and salt if required and stir well

7        Add the fried tofu into the chilli paste and mix well, careful not to break the tofu.

8        Finally add chopped cilantro and garnish.

9        This dish serves about 4 people.

10    Can be served with steamed rice and Vegetable Coconut Gravy for a simple vegetarian meal.
